After transforming The Penny Royal’s beloved 'Dark Ride' to the psychedelic dreamworld of ‘Hypnos cave’ for MOFO 2020, MESS composers Rachael Kim, Katerina Stathis and Mads Davey are following up by taking over the iconic Gorge Scenic Chairlift for MOFO 2021 with ‘Chairway to Heaven.’ work will draw on themes of utopia and otherworldliness to transform the Gorge Scenic Chairlift into a ‘suspended symphony’ in the sky. A twenty-voice analogue synth composition will be split across the twenty individual units of the ride, so that each chair carries one voice through the sky. Speakers placed strategically on each unit, will allow the composition to shift and evolve as the chairs pass each other entering into another one’s sound field. The composition is being composed and recorded by Rachel Kim, Katerina Stathis and Mads Davey on the incredibly rare and priceless collection of analogue synths at Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS.)

Hypnos Cave - MESS and Soma Lumia reimagined the Dark Ride. Analogue synth-soundtrack for the ride, by MESS composers Robin Fox, Katerina Stathis, Mads Davey and Rachael Kim. It’s inspired by stories of the afterlife in Greek mythology, where the dead would drink from the river Lethe—which flowed through the cave of Hypnos, the god of sleep—to forget their past lives and thus find paradise.
